Home Power Matrix was created by us, Laura and Michael, a husband-and-wife team of homeowners who found ourselves needing to understand backup power in a much more serious way.
What we expected to be straightforward research quickly turned into a maze of manufacturer specifications, technical terminology, product comparisons, forums, videos, and conflicting advice.
We spent a tremendous amount of time figuring out questions that should have been easier to answer. Eventually, we realized that if we had to work this hard to understand our options, plenty of other homeowners probably did too.
That’s why we built Home Power Matrix.
Why Backup Power Matters
A power outage can be an inconvenience, but it can also become a serious problem very quickly.
Electricity keeps food and medications refrigerated, powers heating and cooling, runs well pumps and sump pumps, keeps communications available, and supports medical equipment that some people depend on every day.
Preparedness doesn’t mean expecting catastrophe. It means understanding how much your household relies on electricity and having a plan for what happens when it isn’t available.
For some homes, that may mean a small portable power station. For others, it could mean a generator, whole-home battery, solar system, or a combination of technologies. There is no single right answer for everyone.
Making Home Power Easier to Understand
Our goal is to make backup power easier to research and easier to act on.
We cover generators, batteries, portable power stations, solar charging, outage preparedness, and the broader ways homeowners can gain more control over their energy use.
We also build calculators that help turn technical specifications into useful estimates for real households.
Rather than pushing everyone toward the newest or most expensive equipment, we want to explain the tradeoffs clearly enough that readers can decide what makes sense for their home, circumstances, and budget.
How We Approach Recommendations
Home power equipment can be expensive, and there is no shortage of companies trying to sell it.
Our standard is simple:
What would we want someone to tell us if we were making the same decision?
If a less expensive solution does the job well, that matters. If spending more provides meaningful improvements in reliability, capacity, safety, or longevity, that matters too.
Home Power Matrix uses advertising and affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission when readers purchase certain products through the site. That income helps support the research, tools, hosting, and time required to keep building this resource.
We want Home Power Matrix to succeed as a business, but monetization supports the information. It does not determine the information.
Our Mission
At its core, Home Power Matrix exists because we don’t want other people to have to repeat all of the research we did just to understand their options.
We want to make reliable backup power information easier to find, easier to understand, and easier to use, especially when the stakes are higher than simple convenience.
Our mission is straightforward:
Help homeowners understand their power options, make informed decisions, spend their money wisely, and be better prepared when electricity matters most.
